Volunteer Tutor Position Description
Reports to
Administrative Director
Hours
One-hour session(s) with each student once or twice per week (excluding preparation and travel time)
Position Description
Tutors work on a one-to-one basis with students until they reach their goals. A minimum commitment of one year is preferred. Tutors meet with their students at the RFL office (lower level of the Findlay Hancock County Library) and in other community locations as assigned.
Qualifications
- Interested in and able to relate to a wide variety of people
- Literate (professional training is not necessary)
- Flexible, friendly, patient and optimistic (a sense of humor is helpful)
- Completion of a 4-6 hour tutor training
Training
- Phonics-based and whole language approaches to teaching reading
- Specific curricula for teaching adults to read
- Goal- setting and lesson planning
- Critical thinking
- Educational philosophy of working with adult learners
- In-service workshops on specialized topics as offered.
Responsibilities
- Prompt and dependable
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Prepare lessons based on student’s learning needs and styles
- Meet with student on a regular basis
- Report hours (tutoring time, travel and lesson preparation) and student progress towards goal(s) to the Director on a monthly basis
- Notify the Director when tutoring sessions have ceased
- Other duties as assigned by the Director
