2011 Spelling Bee Announcement

Have you heard the BUZZZZ? It’s time to make plans to attend the 22nd Annual Read For LIFE Spelling Bee on April 7, 2011. This year our afternoon includes fun and prizes and our no sting, more fun, format!

The Bee is easier and more fun than ever! Organizations, corporations, and community groups send a table of 3-6 spellers to participate as a team. Together they decide how a word is spelled and write it down for the judges to see. No more sweating in front of the microphone! No more “agony of defeat” when a tough word (or worse, an easy one) is misspelled. In fact, there is no more spelling of a word out loud at all! Points are awarded for each correct answer and the team with the most points at the end of the day is pronounced the winner.

The Bee will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in the Great Room. Once again, Bob LaRiche of LaRiche Toyota-Subaru will be the Bee’s major sponsor.

Individual tickets for lunch and viewing the spelling bee are available for $15 each. A raffle will also be held at the bee. Raffle tickets are available for $1.00 a piece or six for $5.00. Prize values are first place $125; second place $100; and third place $75.00. Many other prizes are also available.

To purchase tickets to attend the bee or buy raffle tickets, please contact the Read for LIFE office at 419-425-3515 or by e-mail at readforlife@yahoo.com.

All proceeds benefit Read for L.I.F.E., a non-profit organization helping adults learn basic reading, writing and math skills. Reservations to attend are due by April 2, 2011.

2010 Spelling Bee Results

The 21st Annual Read For LIFE Community Spelling Bee was a great success! From the delicious lunch to Miss Ohio to 14 spelling teams, the event was great fun and raised much needed funds for the RFL program. The Bee was held for the first time in the Great Hall at First Presbyterian Church. Attendees were treated to alphabet soup, chicken croissant sandwiches, and mouth-watering strawberry pie to start the event. During lunch, items donated by many area businesses were raffled off to lucky winners. Miss Ohio, Erica Gelhaus, joined the event this year as a guest judge and spoke to those attending about literacy issues. Jeff Winkle, pronouncer, started the Bee off. After 12 regular spelling rounds, a buzz word round, and seven sudden death rounds, the team from Marathon Oil Company/Marathon Petroleum Co. LLC won the Bee by correctly spelling the word, irascibility! Congratulations to them and a huge thank you to all that supported the Read For LIFE Spelling Bee!
